Franzen, Ward Help Wings, ‘Canes Advance
Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin may have getting most of the attention thanks to their head-to-head battle in the second round of the NHL Playoffs, but two other exciting series wrapped up in a pair of Game Sevens Thursday night.
In Detroit, Johan Franzen and a host of role players helped the Red Wings outlast the Anaheim Ducks. And in Boston, stellar netminding from Cam Ward and some overtime heroics from an unlikely scorer gave the Carolina Hurricanes just enough to oust the top-seeded Boston Bruins.
What do these two men have in common? Neither is the most collected player on his team - Carolina has Eric Staal, while Detroit has a full compliment of stars - but each is known for coming up big when it matters most.
Franzen is going on a postseason scoring spree for the second straight year, utilizing his dangerous blend of size and touch. Ward’s credentials are even more impressive: at age 25, he’s already won a Stanley Cup and a Conn Smythe Trophy.
Playoff performers often catch the eye of card collectors in a hurry, and these two guys are only adding to their reputations for delivering in the clutch. Click on the links below to get full lists of their rookie cards while they keep pushing for the Cup.
