Dinosaur Teeth (!) and Other Fossils Now Live in Champ’s Hockey
I generally like my sports cards to be about… well, sports, but there’s no denying the popularity of some of the rare insert cards that have proliferating in sports card sets that have no obvious connection to sports. And just when you think you’ve seen everything that could possible be attached to a card, the manufacturers push the envelope again.
The card pictured here is a great example. It’s from 2008-09 Champ’s Hockey from Upper Deck, and it has a fossilized tooth from a pterosaur encased inside. Yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like.
Since this card and other fossil cards from the product have to be about as thick as ten regular cards, they would be easy to feel out by feeling through packs. To give everyone a fair shot at them, Upper Deck decided to distribute them using redemption cards.
The good news is that the redemption cards and beginning to be redeemed now, and collectors are taking notice.
“There has never been anything like these cards before, especially the cards with the teeth,” said Josh Zusman, Upper Deck’s hockey brand manager, in a recent press release. “The cards are very thick and it is almost as if the specimen is showcased in a miniature shadowbox. Everyone who has seen the cards has been enamored by the clean, classy presentation and the uniqueness of the fossils.”
Now the only question is, what will they think of next?
